Write a Letter to the Editor

Short letters to the editor are best because they have a greater chance of being published and read. Below are a few helpful guidelines to follow when writing a letter to the editor.

  • Write an original, thoughtful letter.

  • Do not repeat yourself. Keep sentences short.

  • State how the issue affects you or your family.

  • Begin your letter with clear sentences stating your position on the issue.

  • Make the case that resolving the crisis is urgent.

  • Close your letter with sentences that make your position clear.

Generally, letters to the editor should be about 250 words, but be sure to check the requirements of your local newspaper to ensure your letter fits the guidelines for submission.
